The Office of Inspector General (OIG)

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is authorized by County Ordinance 6.44.190 “to promote constitutional policing and the fair and impartial administration of justice, and to facilitate the Board of Supervisors’ responsibility without obstructing the Sheriff’s criminal investigation function. The OIG’s scope includes matters relevant to the policies, procedures, practices, and operations of the Sheriff’s and Probation departments…the OIG shall have access to all the Departments’ information; documents; materials; facilities; and meetings, reviews, and other proceedings necessary to carry out the OIG’S duties under this section.” See also California Government Code Section 25303.

The Department is subject to oversight from multiple entities, including the Civilian Oversight Commission, the Office of the Inspector (OIG), outside monitors of lawsuits and settlement agreements, and a federal court. The Department regularly responds to requests for information and documentation from each of these entities and attempts to do so in a timely manner.…

The Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission (COC)

The Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission (COC) is authorized by Chapter 3.79 of the Los Angeles County Code. The purpose of the COC “is to improve public transparency and accountability with respect to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, by providing robust opportunities for public engagement, ongoing analysis, and oversight of the Department’s policies, practices, procedures, and advice to the Board of Supervisors, the Sheriff’s Department, and the public.”
