Parking Enforcement

The primary Mission of Parking Enforcement Detail (PED) is to ensure the residents of the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County are provided with expeditious vehicle movement to help alleviate parking congestion, improve the availability of parking choices, and to assist the communities in addressing all parking related matters.

PED shall protect and with fairness, apportion scarce parking spaces for all legitimate vehicles by insuring those who violate parking regulations are properly addressed through the California Vehicle Codes (CVC), the Los Angeles County Vehicle Codes (LACoVC) and other various municipal codes.

Assembly Bill 413 Information

Assembly Bill 413 - video

On January 1, 2025, Assembly Bill 413 which introduces California Vehicle Code 22500(n) went into effect.

This law prohibits stopping, parking, or leaving any vehicle standing—whether attended or unattended—except when necessary to avoid traffic conflicts or in compliance with directions from a peace officer or an official traffic control device. Specifically, vehicles cannot stop, park, or stand:

  • Within 20 feet of the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk, or
  • Within 15 feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present.

The purpose of this new law is to increase visibility, improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic collisions.

Recognizing that not all curbs are marked or have signage indicating compliance requirements, the LASD’s Parking Enforcement Detail will enforce this law through citations or warnings. To aid public understanding, a practical reference point is that a mid-size SUV is approximately 15 feet in length.

The painting of curbs to enhance visibility and compliance falls under the purview of the Department of Public Works (DPW). Collaborating with DPW will be crucial in ensuring clear curb markings and signage are implemented where necessary.

Additionally, citation fees for violations, including measures for repeat offenders, are set by the state. As we enforce this new regulation, we aim to work closely with the Board of Supervisors (BOS) to address any community concerns and application of the law across the county. At this time, LASD Parking Enforcement Detail will issue a warning for vehicles in violation of this new law until May 1, 2025, at which point a $63 citation (subject to change) will be issued to vehicles parked within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk.
