Every year we celebrate a three-day #MemorialDayWeekend with our families and friends. Before we sit down to enjoy that delicious BBQ, it’s important that we understand and remember our history regarding this holiday, so we can pass it on to the next generation and never forget why Memorial Day is important.
A brief history on #MemorialDay. It was originally called “Decoration Day” when families would decorate the tombs of those who died in the Civil War with flowers. When the United States became entangled in other wars, the name evolved to Memorial Day.
In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which designated the day as “Memorial Day” and selected the last Monday in May as the day we would honor and pay tribute to those who lost their lives in war. In 1971, through an act of Congress, “Memorial Day” was declared a federal holiday.
Today, on #MemorialDay, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department pays tribute and remembers those courageous and brave warriors in the U.S. Armed Forces, who lost their lives selflessly, fighting and defending our nation for our basic rights and freedom. In memory of the many we have lost throughout our nation; we thank them for their service. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and the families who continue to mourn them. #MemorialDay2023
