Updated Information
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department – Pico Rivera, is proud to offer a Community Academy, with a focus on the concerns of residents where police services are provided. During the five-week academy, students will be introduced to some of the operations of the Sheriff’s Department. Students will learn the responsibilities and function of various Pico Rivera Station team members, from the members themselves. These personnel could include Patrol Operations, Dispatch, and other specialized LASD units such as the Mental Evaluation Team, Special Enforcement Bureau (SWAT), K-9, Narcotics, Homicide, and other law enforcement related fields.
Community Academy Students will gain a better understanding of the Sheriff’s Department, how it functions, and manners in which it serves the community. Although the subject matter is similar to a traditional law enforcement academy, it is not designed to prepare students to become a deputy sheriff. The sole purpose of the academy is to provide insight into the function and duties performed by law enforcement personnel, and to share resources available to the communities we serve.
Students will meet Captain Jose Hernandez and other Pico Station team members. We encourage students to ask questions and express their opinions about community issues. The primary goal of the Community Academy is to increase transparency and engagement between the community and their Sheriff’s Department. The Community Academy is a component of refocused efforts designed to ultimately foster a stronger relationship between the community and its law enforcement with the shared goal of building a safer community.
