Recently refurbished, the Audrey and Sydney Irmas
Youth Activity Center houses the South Los Angeles
Sheriff’s Station Youth Activity League, a venue that
offers to local children organized sports activities,
tutoring, and an opportunity to interact with responsible
adults in a safe and secure environment. The Sheriff’s
Department currently operates ten Youth Activity
Leagues throughout the County.
Established in 1971, the leagues provide thousands of
youngsters with organized activities such as boxing,
aerobics, karate, weight training, tutoring, scouting, and
summer employment. All of the programs are tied to
education. To participate, each child must strive to
maintain a “C” average minimum or be involved in the
league’s tutoring program.
Operated under the auspices of the Sheriff’s Youth
Foundation, and funded by grants and charitable
donations, the programs espouse multi-culturalism
without economic boundaries. Each child receives
lessons on self-esteem, peer pressure, empowerment,
social values, and other areas of self-enrichment.
