The primary explorer training academy is at the Sheriff's Training Academy and Regional Services Center (STARS) in Whittier, with satellite training academies at Lancaster Sheriff Station and the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita
The academy training experience promises to be both challenging and rewarding. The academy is demanding and challenging. The training exposes recruits to the world of law enforcement and provides tools to enhance their self-confidence and self-discipline. Recruits are encouraged to set and meet personal goals
The academy staff is comprised of current and former law enforcement explorers who have successfully completed the same academy course. The staff is dedicated to guiding, motivating, mentoring and supporting recruits throughout this experience
The explorer academy is designed to provide basic knowledge of exploring while providing an experience very similar to that of an actual police academy. The academy is generally eighteen (18) weeks long and held on Saturdays
Recruits will be responsible for: academics, physical training, defensive tactics, note-taking, written and practical application exams, basic drill and will develop team building skills that will benefit them in the future
Upon successful completion of the training course, graduates will receive a certificate from the Sheriff and earn the title of Deputy Explorer
