Veteran Preference Points for the application process
Military Veterans Affairs Unit
MVA is a specific LASD unit that serves Reservist/Veteran personnel. They provide excellent care related to military activations or other issues. MVA also networks with vetted outside agencies to explore best services for Department members.
US VETS and the JVS Veterans First Program
Grants are rewarded to help cover academy expenses. Special funding for uniforms is available.
Compressed Work Schedule
Compressed work schedules are available for many deputies. Deputies who work on compressed schedules work the same number of hours each week but can have more consecutive days off, by working longer days.
Paid Military Leave
30 day full pay military leave for training, deployment, etc (if absence is over 30 days, LASD makes up the difference in pay).
Military Reserve & National Guard Friendly Employer
Reservists/Guard members receive Flex Time for military leave.
Use your GI Benefits while in the Academy
Military specific Recruiters
Recruiters with prior military service are available to assist and mentor veteran candidates.
Grow your military savings plan
Transfer your Thrift Savings Plan to the Department’s Deferred Compensation Plan.
Display Service Ribbons
Military veterans are highly encouraged to wear their military ribbons on their class A uniform during authorized events.
Military Buy-Back option
Purchase years of your prior military service to retire earlier. The service credit purchased adds to total years of Department service.
Special Military Patches
Deputy Sheriffs are authorized to display Military patches on their uniforms during National Veteran and Military Families Month
