Region 1

Have You Ever Thought...

about what it would be like to match wits against a cunning suspect? Have you ever tested your powers of observation to get the feel of what we expect our deputies to be able to notice and deduce?

Working with eight of our stations as the Chief of Field Operations Region I during the past six years, I have been impressed and appreciative every time I read an arrest report about a situation in which a deputy outsmarted a criminal suspect, or in which deputies have quickly and cleverly detected the identity of and located a suspect at large, or have shown exceptional knowledge about the people and affairs in “the streets.”

I wanted these examples of extraordinary police work to be shared beyond the reach of the individual stations. I decided to write a collection of short stories chronicling some of the most exceptional examples that I pulled from several hundred arrest reports.

The stories serve as a means of paying tribute to the level of commitment and expertise that both deputies and non-sworn employees bring to this job, rain or shine, holidays and weekends, in the middle of the night, and other times when others are busy enjoying life or sleeping.

We will post the stories written about these arrests on this website page over the course of 2009. Even though some literary license was used and suspects’ names were changed, every action attributed to the deputies actually happened as described.

We hope you enjoy the stories!
